Description
Combine supplied observation and flower-contact flags into a recorded visit flag.
Insect observations distinguish specimen anatomy, taxonomic sources, recorded visits, catch categories and sampling effort. Bulb-hours differ from elapsed trap-hours, and a landmark length/width ratio differs from an aerodynamic wing aspect ratio. Nondetection, missing observation and uncertain classification require their own record states.
Combine supplied observation and flower-contact flags into a recorded visit flag.
When to use this tool
Use Pollinator Contact Visit Flag when you already have flowerContactObserved, pollenStructureContactObserved, observationComplete and need to combine supplied observation and flower-contact flags into a recorded visit flag.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter flowerContactObserved, pollenStructureContactObserved, observationComplete. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read recordedContactVisit, missing. Inspect recordedContactVisit, missing before interpreting the associated values.
Return observationComplete && flowerContactObserved && pollenStructureContactObserved, plus missing=!observationComplete.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| flowerContactObserved | Flower Contact Observed | Required. Boolean. |
| pollenStructureContactObserved | Pollen Structure Contact Observed | Required. Boolean. |
| observationComplete | Observation Complete | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| recordedContactVisit | Recorded Contact Visit | Required. Boolean. |
| missing | True for an incomplete observation; a false contact flag then does not establish an observed nonvisit. | Required. Boolean. |
{
"input": {
"flowerContactObserved": true,
"pollenStructureContactObserved": true,
"observationComplete": true
},
"output": {
"recordedContactVisit": true,
"missing": false
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- Incomplete observation returns a false visit flag even with positive contact flags. No insect behavior, pollen transfer or actual absence is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Inspect original specimens, images, recordings and trap logs when verifying observations. Use the complete survey and calibration method for abundance or behavioral conclusions, preserving effort, detection and taxonomic definitions rather than treating one rate or label as that analysis.
