Description
wingLengthsPerSecond = flightSpeed/wingLength; advancePerBeat = flightSpeed/wingbeatHz; advanceRatio = flightSpeed/(wingLength*wingbeatHz).
Wing geometry and flight measurements use different physical quantities: mass per area, weight per area, span-based shape factors and motion per wingbeat. Their meaning depends on the chosen wing area, length scale and frequency convention.
wingLengthsPerSecond = flightSpeed/wingLength; advancePerBeat = flightSpeed/wingbeatHz; advanceRatio = flightSpeed/(wingLength*wingbeatHz).
When to use this tool
Use Insect Flight Speed Wing Length Factor when checking a supplied wing-geometry or kinematic factor.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter flightSpeed, wingLength, wingbeatHz. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read wingLengthsPerSecond, advancePerBeat, advanceRatio. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative flightSpeed and positive wingLength and wingbeatHz. wingLengthsPerSecond = flightSpeed/wingLength; advancePerBeat = flightSpeed/wingbeatHz; advanceRatio = flightSpeed/(wingLength*wingbeatHz).1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| flightSpeed | Flight Speed | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| wingLength | Wing Length | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| wingbeatHz | Wingbeat Hz | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| wingLengthsPerSecond | Wing Lengths Per Second | Required. Finite number. |
| advancePerBeat | Advance Per Beat | Required. Finite number. |
| advanceRatio | Flight speed divided by wing length times wingbeat frequency under this local convention. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Use speed in the wing-length unit per second and frequency in Hz. advanceRatio here omits any additional stroke-amplitude or geometric factor used by other aerodynamic definitions.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use an aerodynamic model and suitable observations when the question concerns flight forces, performance or biological function.
