Insect Antennal Segment Length Ratio Tool

Zero-based segment index; the first longest segment wins ties.

Description

Summarize segment lengths with a selected segment’s total-length fraction and the first longest index.

Insect morphology measurements depend on landmark definitions, image scale and specimen condition. A length ratio can be dimensionless while a calibrated coordinate has physical units; neither arithmetic operation validates anatomical correspondence or preservation assumptions.

Summarize segment lengths with a selected segment’s total-length fraction and the first longest index.

When to use this tool

Use Insect Antennal Segment Length Ratio when checking a supplied morphological measurement, calibration or length ratio.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter segmentLengths, referenceSegment. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read totalLength, referenceFraction, longestIndex. Use the output convention below.

Require nonempty positive segmentLengths and a valid zero-based referenceSegment. totalLength is the sum; referenceFraction = selected length/totalLength; longestIndex is the first index attaining the maximum length.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use a common length unit. This ratio and first-tie rule do not identify anatomical homology, developmental stage or measurement uncertainty.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified imaging calibration and appropriate specimen methods for anatomical interpretation, and propagate uncertainty when measurement precision matters.
