Arthropod Body Length Calibration Pair Tool

Scale an explicit arthropod image body length by a supplied compatible same-plane reference without recognizing landmarks.

Description

Scale a supplied body-image length by a reference length.

Insect observations distinguish specimen anatomy, taxonomic sources, recorded visits, catch categories and sampling effort. Bulb-hours differ from elapsed trap-hours, and a landmark length/width ratio differs from an aerodynamic wing aspect ratio. Nondetection, missing observation and uncertain classification require their own record states.

Scale a supplied body-image length by a reference length.

When to use this tool

Use Arthropod Body Length Calibration Pair when you already have bodyPixels, referencePixels, referenceLength and need to scale a supplied body-image length by a reference length.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter bodyPixels, referencePixels, referenceLength. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read bodyLength. Use the output convention below.

Require bodyPixels>=0, referencePixels positive/finite and referenceLength>=0; return bodyPixels/referencePixels*referenceLength.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
bodyPixelsBody PixelsRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
referencePixelsReference PixelsRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
referenceLengthReference LengthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.

Limitations and assumptions

  • A zero physical reference returns zero. Linear calibration, common image scale and matching landmarks are assumed; no lens or perspective correction is performed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect original specimens, images, recordings and trap logs when verifying observations. Use the complete survey and calibration method for abundance or behavioral conclusions, preserving effort, detection and taxonomic definitions rather than treating one rate or label as that analysis.
