MTBF Reliability Calculator

Actual repair able-system exposure/failure MTBF point estimate, no assumed exponential survival probability or confidence bound. Actual independently established compatible SI units/model context; conditional arithmetic, not code compliance, engineering design or safe operation approval.

Description

A repairable-system MTBF point estimate divides operating exposure by observed failures.

A repairable-system MTBF point estimate divides operating exposure by observed failures.1

This tool calculates hours per failure without inferring a confidence bound or an exponential survival model.

When to use MTBF Reliability Calculator

Use this tool to calculate hours per failure without inferring a confidence bound or an exponential survival model.

How to use MTBF Reliability Calculator and how it works

  1. Prepare actualTotalOperatingHours, actualObservedFailureCount, with the units, conventions and assumptions below.
  2. Enter the required fields and run MTBF Reliability Calculator.
  3. Read result.value using the output definitions below.
  4. Correct any rejected inputs and rerun; interpret the result within the stated model and its assumptions.
Input fieldMeaningValue typeRequirement
actualTotalOperatingHoursActual Total Operating Hours. Use the units and matching context stated in the calculation below.numberRequired; nonnegative; finite; other constraints below
actualObservedFailureCountActual Observed Failure Count. Use the units and matching context stated in the calculation below.numberRequired; integer 1–1000000; finite; other constraints below

Supply nonnegative total operating hours and an integer failure count from 1 to 1,000,000. Divide operating hours by failures and return the observed mean time between failures in hours. A zero failure count is rejected rather than treated as an infinite or statistically certified MTBF.

MTBFhours=operatingHours/failureCount

Apply the input ordering, units and branch conditions stated above.

Limitations and assumptions

The calculation uses the supplied observations and model inputs. It does not collect measurements, select a reference population or coefficient, or establish that the model applies to the actual case. The stated branch conditions and output units remain part of the result.

All fields require explicit values. Unexpected fields, wrong types, nonfinite numbers and sparse arrays are rejected. Alignment, bounds and supported-token rules are explained above; extremely large inputs or nonfinite results can also fail. Input errors differ from successful false comparisons, unavailable-domain flags and empty match lists.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Weibull Reliability Calculator for a complementary operation: A two-parameter Weibull survival model depends on a calibrated time scale and shape.

Use Availability Calculator for a complementary operation: Inherent steady availability compares operating time with operating plus repair time under matched definitions.
