Description
Convert a supplied reservoir flow time unit and calculate a conditional residence-time ratio.
Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.
Convert a supplied reservoir flow time unit and calculate a conditional residence-time ratio.
When to use this tool
Use Earth Reservoir Stock Flux Unit Crosswalk when you already have stock, flowPerSourceTime, targetTimePerSourceTime and need to convert a supplied reservoir flow time unit and calculate a conditional residence-time ratio.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter stock, flowPerSourceTime, targetTimePerSourceTime. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read flowPerTargetTime, residenceTargetTimes, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.
Require stock/flow>=0 and targetTimePerSourceTime>0; flowPerTarget=flowPerSource/targetTimePerSourceTime. Return stock/flowPerTarget when positive, otherwise zero with defined=false.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| stock | Stock | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| flowPerSourceTime | Flow Per Source Time | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| targetTimePerSourceTime | Positive count of target time units per source time unit; divide the source-time flow by this factor. | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| flowPerTargetTime | Flow Per Target Time | Required. Finite number. |
| residenceTargetTimes | Residence Target Times | Required. Finite number. |
| defined | True only if converted flow>0; zero flow or conversion underflow yields a zero residence-time placeholder. | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- For source years to target days use target days per source year. The zero placeholder also occurs if conversion underflows; no steady state, actual residence-time distribution or physical flow is established.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
