Tissue Landmark Growth Ratio

Compare an explicitly measured tissue-landmark distance pair without attributing the change to a growth mechanism.

Description

Calculate a supplied landmark-distance growth ratio and fractional change.

Developmental measurements depend on specimen identity, staging sources, coordinate registration, image scale and time-zero conventions. A section-area fraction differs from a volume, a generation-number step differs from verified lineage, and a midpoint of observations differs from an exact event time. Local scalar terms do not infer developmental mechanisms.

Calculate a supplied landmark-distance growth ratio and fractional change.

When to use this tool

Use Tissue Landmark Growth Ratio when you already have initialLandmarkDistance, laterLandmarkDistance and need to calculate a supplied landmark-distance growth ratio and fractional change.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter initialLandmarkDistance, laterLandmarkDistance. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read growthRatio, fractionalChange. Use the output convention below.

Require initial distance>0 and later distance>=0; ratio=later/initial, change=(later-initial)/initial.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
initialLandmarkDistanceInitial Landmark DistanceRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
laterLandmarkDistanceLater Landmark DistanceRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
growthRatioGrowth RatioRequired. Finite number.
fractionalChange(later-initial)/initial, a signed decimal fraction rather than percentage number.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • A decrease gives negative change. Matching physical units and landmarks are assumed; no growth is measured, stage inferred or biological process validated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect original specimens, calibrated images, acquisition timelines and staging references for biological interpretation. Use complete image, lineage and experimental analyses when needed; local ratios, source-qualified labels and supplied coordinate arithmetic do not perform those analyses.
