Embryonic Landmark Relative Axis Position Tool

Normalize a supplied embryonic landmark coordinate between explicit distinct axis endpoints without clipping or assigning developmental stage.

Description

Normalize a supplied landmark coordinate between two directed axis endpoints.

Developmental measurements depend on specimen identity, staging sources, coordinate registration, image scale and time-zero conventions. A section-area fraction differs from a volume, a generation-number step differs from verified lineage, and a midpoint of observations differs from an exact event time. Local scalar terms do not infer developmental mechanisms.

Normalize a supplied landmark coordinate between two directed axis endpoints.

When to use this tool

Use Embryonic Landmark Relative Axis Position when you already have landmarkCoordinate, axisStart, axisEnd and need to normalize a supplied landmark coordinate between two directed axis endpoints.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter landmarkCoordinate, axisStart, axisEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read axisFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require axisEnd!=axisStart; return (landmark-axisStart)/(axisEnd-axisStart).1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
landmarkCoordinateLandmark CoordinateRequired. Finite number.
axisStartAxis StartRequired. Finite number.
axisEndAxis EndRequired. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
axisFractionDirected coordinate fraction; reversed axes and values outside [0,1] accepted. Extreme endpoint subtraction may overflow and yield a misleading zero; rescale first.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Reversed axes and positions outside the endpoints are accepted, so fractions may be outside [0,1]. No anatomical axis, landmark or spatial registration is determined. Extreme endpoint subtraction can overflow and yield a misleading zero fraction; rescale consistent units first.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect original specimens, calibrated images, acquisition timelines and staging references for biological interpretation. Use complete image, lineage and experimental analyses when needed; local ratios, source-qualified labels and supplied coordinate arithmetic do not perform those analyses.
