Cell Lineage Depth Increment Tool

Compare supplied lineage-tree depth metadata without reconstructing a lineage or predicting development.

Description

Compare lineage depths with an expected increment.

Developmental stages and lineages can be represented by labels, ordered events and observation intervals. Index and time differences preserve a declared representation but do not discover lineage, assign stage or establish biological equivalence.

Compare lineage depths with an expected increment.

When to use this tool

Use Cell Lineage Depth Increment when checking an explicit stage, lineage or observation-coordinate convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter parentDepth, childDepth, suppliedExpectedIncrement. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read increment, residual. Use the output convention below.

Compare lineage depths with an expected increment. Require nonnegative whole parentDepth, childDepth and expected increment; increment = child-parent and residual subtracts the expectation.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
parentDepthParent DepthRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.

suppliedExpectedIncrementSupplied Expected IncrementRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
incrementIncrementRequired. Safe integer.
residualSigned difference in the direction defined above, using the same units as its compared quantities.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Negative increments are retained; the tool does not validate a lineage graph or actual parentage.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review the original biological evidence and its staging or lineage model before drawing mechanistic conclusions.
