BEWE Erosion Index Calculator
BEWEsix independently established highest-sextant0–3codes. Actual examined/excluded sextants and qualified grading external, not automatically a treatment recommendation. Sum only independently assessed codes for the declared instrument/version; exact maxima [3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3] and minima [0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0]. Unknown items preserve possible total bounds without imputation. No questionnaire reproduction, clinical item assignment, norm, diagnosis, treatment or outcome prediction.
Description
BEWE uses six sextant-level erosive-wear codes.

A partial score should retain possible totals rather than treat unknown sextants as unaffected. Use this tool to sum known instrument item codes and retain possible totals for unknown items.
When to use BEWE Erosion Index Calculator
Use this tool to sum known instrument item codes and retain possible totals for unknown items. Establish the qualified examination or measurement context, matching instrument/protocol edition, site order and units.
How to use BEWE Erosion Index Calculator and understand its results
- Establish the qualified examination or measurement context, matching instrument/protocol edition, site order and units.
- Enter independentlyCodedItemScores, itemKnownFlags, using the field meanings and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read result.knownItemSum, result.minimumPossibleTotal, result.maximumPossibleTotal, result.unknownItemIndices. Interpret each field using the units, signs and evidence rules below.
- If input validation fails, correct the reported field and run again. Before applying a successful result, check the stated reference scope, units, assumptions and any retained unknown evidence.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| independentlyCodedItemScores | Independently coded item scores | list of number | Required |
| itemKnownFlags | Item known flags; 1 means known and 0 means unknown; keep the same item order | list of number | Required |
Supply exactly 6 aligned item scores and binary known flags in the independently established instrument order. Every score must be integer 0–3. Unknown placeholders still require valid codes. Sum known codes and add 0 or 3 for each unknown item to obtain minimum and maximum possible totals. Retain zero-based unknown indices; all-unknown evidence is accepted. Item grading and clinical interpretation remain external.
| Zero-based column | Criterion |
|---|---|
| 0 | Independently assigned sextant 1 |
| 1 | Independently assigned sextant 2 |
| 2 | Independently assigned sextant 3 |
| 3 | Independently assigned sextant 4 |
| 4 | Independently assigned sextant 5 |
| 5 | Independently assigned sextant 6 |
knownSum=Σ(score_i×known_i); minimumPossibleTotal=knownSum; maximumPossibleTotal=knownSum+3×unknownCount Apply the field units and exact ordering, boundary and evidence rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| result | Structured result containing the calculation or selected reference fields below | object |
| result.knownItemSum | Sum of known item codes | number |
| result.minimumPossibleTotal | Known sum plus unknown minima | number |
| result.maximumPossibleTotal | Known sum plus unknown maxima | number |
| result.unknownItemIndices | Zero-based positions of unknown items | list of values |

} Limitations and assumptions
Interpretation depends on the independently assigned codes and instrument or dentition scope. Unknown evidence is retained rather than treated as a known zero. The calculation does not diagnose disease, assign clinical grades or determine treatment.
Every listed input requires an explicit value. Unexpected fields, incorrect value types, nonfinite numbers and sparse numeric arrays fail validation; tool-specific bounds and alignment rules apply as described above. Extremely large inputs or outputs can also be rejected. An input error is distinct from a successful calculation that reports a false comparison or retains unknown evidence.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Smith-Knight Tooth Wear Index Calculator to examine a related aspect: The Smith–Knight tooth wear index records wear using defined surface criteria.
Use Crown Reduction mm Lookup where its separate inputs and scope apply: Crown reduction requirements depend on material, preparation design and clinical anatomy.
