Smith Predictor Delay Index Term Tool

Resolve a supplied delay into integer/fractional sample offsets; no process-model prediction is performed.

Description

Split supplied delay into sample count, fraction and delayed index.

Sampled control models distinguish physical delay, held-state age, phase convention and quantization. A local frequency factor or error envelope assumes the stated sample and signal model, rather than measuring actual sensor or plant behavior.

Split supplied delay into sample count, fraction and delayed index.

When to use this tool

Use Smith Predictor Delay Index Term when checking one supplied sample, delay or quantization convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter delaySeconds, sampleSeconds, currentIndex. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read wholeSamples, fractionalSample, delayedIndex. Use the output convention below.

Split supplied delay into sample count, fraction and delayed index. Require delaySeconds >= 0, sampleSeconds > 0 and nonnegative whole currentIndex; floor delay/sample, retain fractional remainder and subtract whole count from index.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
delaySecondsDelay in seconds on the same time basis as sampling or frequency.Required. Finite number; minimum 0.
sampleSecondsSample interval in seconds; strictly positive.Required. Finite number; strictly above 0.
currentIndexCurrent IndexRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
wholeSamplesWhole SamplesRequired. Safe integer.
fractionalSampleFractional SampleRequired. Finite number.
delayedIndexcurrentIndex-wholeSamples; negative values are retained, with no history buffer validation.Required. Safe integer.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The delayed index may be negative; no signal buffer, interpolation or Smith-predictor loop is executed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use a validated sampled-system and measurement model for practical control design, operating limits and safety.
