Sheet Name Invalid Chars Validator
Check Excel sheet-name spelling for empty text, more than 31 UTF-16 units, forbidden characters, boundary apostrophes, and reserved History; existing workbook name collisions are outside this check.
Description
Excel worksheet names have spelling limits independent of CSV contents.
Excel worksheet names have spelling limits independent of CSV contents. Name validity can be screened before creating or renaming a sheet.1
Check Excel sheet-name spelling for empty text, more than 31 UTF-16 units, forbidden characters, boundary apostrophes, and reserved History; existing workbook name collisions are outside this check.

How to use Sheet Name Invalid Chars Validator and understand its results
- Prepare the CSV text, decoded cells or byte values requested below. Choose delimiter and header flags explicitly when those fields are present.
- Enter name using the field table, then run the tool.
- Read valid, reasons. Interpret flags, units, ordering and placeholder values using the rules below.
- Review any reported issue or failed check, correct the supplied values when appropriate, and verify the result in its intended context.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type and bounds | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| name | Name | string; maximum text length 100000 | Required |
Check an exact supplied name for empty text, more than 31 UTF-16 units, backslash/slash/question/star/colon/brackets, starting or ending apostrophe and case-insensitive History. Return all applicable reasons.2
valid = no empty, too-long, forbidden-character, boundary-apostrophe or reserved-name reasons This summarizes the declared operation. Units, indexing, inclusivity and exceptional cases are explained in the surrounding text.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| valid | Valid | boolean |
| reasons | Reasons | list of string |
{
"input": {
"name": "Sales/Q1"
},
"output": {
"valid": false,
"reasons": [
"forbidden_character"

}
} Limitations and assumptions
Existing workbook name collisions and other workbook context are not checked. A false flag is a completed spelling check, not a malformed request.
Supply the decoded cell strings or raw values declared by the input fields; this tool does not load a spreadsheet file. Malformed requests produce input errors. A successfully evaluated request can still contain false flags, empty result lists or a result outside the supplied threshold; those outcomes have the meanings stated above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Choose Space-In-Column-Name Flagger for this operation: Find header indices containing ASCII space U+0020 without changing the names; tabs and other Unicode whitespace are separate characters. For a complementary task, use Field Whitespace Trimmer for this operation: Trim ECMAScript boundary whitespace from every decoded CSV cell and re-encode with minimal quoting and LF record endings; interior whitespace is preserved.
