Column Letter to Index (A=1)

Convert ASCII A1 column letters to a one-based safe integer using bijective base 26; generalized columns are accepted beyond Excel worksheet limits.

Description

A1 column letters encode a one-based position using bijective base 26.

A1 column letters encode a one-based position using bijective base 26. Unlike ordinary positional digits, A represents 1 and Z represents 26, so AA is column 27.1

When to use Column Letter to Index (A=1)

Use this tool to convert ASCII A1 column letters to a one-based safe integer using bijective base 26; generalized columns are accepted beyond Excel worksheet limits.

Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.

How to use Column Letter to Index (A=1) and understand its results

  1. Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
  2. Enter letters using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read column. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
lettersLettersstring; maximum length: 12Required

Enter one to twelve ASCII letters with no whitespace or other characters. Lowercase is accepted and converted to uppercase for calculation. The tool accumulates the index using exact integers and rejects the result if it exceeds the safe-integer range; it returns the one-based numeric column.

column ← 26 × column + letter value for each A…Z letter

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This does not parse row numbers, dollar markers or full cell addresses. Generalized column labels beyond XFD are accepted, so a separate worksheet-limit check is required when exporting to Excel.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Column Index to Letter (A1 Style): Convert a one-based safe integer column index to ASCII A1 column letters without imposing Excel worksheet width limits. For a complementary task, use Cell Coordinate A1 Parser: Parse one A1 address with optional absolute row and column markers, returning one-based safe indices and a canonical uppercase address; sheet names and ranges are excluded.
