Cell Length Min/Max Per Column
Measure minimum and maximum Unicode code-point lengths of decoded data cells per column, including empty strings and excluding an explicit header; zero observations return count zero.
Description
Cell-length profiles help find unusually large or empty values before importing a CSV table.
Cell-length profiles help find unusually large or empty values before importing a CSV table. This tool measures decoded Unicode code points, so an emoji represented by a surrogate pair counts as one character; it does not count encoded bytes.1
Measure minimum and maximum Unicode code-point lengths of decoded data cells per column, including empty strings and excluding an explicit header; zero observations return count zero.
When to use Cell Length Min/Max Per Column
Use this tool to measure minimum and maximum Unicode code-point lengths of decoded data cells per column, including empty strings and excluding an explicit header; zero observations return count zero.
Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
How to use Cell Length Min/Max Per Column and understand its results
- Choose the original CSV text, decoded cell strings, byte values or counts requested by this tool. Use the stated delimiter, encoding, indexing and number/date convention.
- Enter csv, delimiter, hasHeader using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read columns. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| csv | CSV text | string; maximum length: 100000 | Required |
| delimiter | Delimiter | string; one of ,, ;, | Required |
| hasHeader | Has header | boolean | Required |
Enter rectangular CSV text, a supported delimiter and whether the first record is a header. Quoted fields are decoded before measurement; with hasHeader true the first record is excluded. For each column, the tool counts data cells and reports their shortest and longest code-point lengths. Empty fields count as length zero. A header-only table has zero count and zero minimum/maximum for each column; an empty file without a header has no columns. A requested header on empty text is an error.
column minimum = min(code-point lengths); column maximum = max(code-point lengths) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

} Limitations and assumptions
These are code-point lengths, not grapheme clusters, UTF-16 units or an automatically chosen Excel character-count convention. It does not infer data types. Ragged tables are rejected and parsing is limited to 10,000 total fields.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use RFC 4180 Quoted Field Parser Check: Check RFC 4180 field quoting with explicit Unicode and CR/LF extensions; blank records are retained, and field-width consistency is checked separately. For a complementary task, use Excel 32,767-Char Cell Limit Check: Compare supplied nonnegative cell character counts with Excel’s 32,767-character limit and report zero-based offending indices; the caller selects the character-count convention.
