Description
Calculate a supplied document-redaction span length.
Justice records distinguish timestamps, civil dates, case references, hearing slots and document offsets. A calendar-day count depends on its endpoint policy, while a signed clock gap can be negative. Formatting a docket reference or comparing pseudonyms does not authenticate a case, identify a person or establish lawful disclosure.
Calculate a supplied document-redaction span length.
When to use this tool
Use Case Document Redaction Span Length when you already have startOffset, endOffset and need to calculate a supplied document-redaction span length.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter startOffset, endOffset. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read length. Use the output convention below.
Require safe whole 0<=startOffset<=endOffset; return end-start.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| startOffset | Nonnegative safe whole offset in the caller-defined indexing unit. | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| endOffset | Excluded end boundary at least start; the document itself is not inspected. | Required. Safe integer. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| length | Length | Required. Safe integer. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Offsets use the caller's indexing unit and a half-open length convention. No document is read, span validated, redaction applied or disclosure safety established.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Check the original custody, court, service and document records alongside the applicable rules. Verify clock alignment, calendar conventions and permissions before using local counts or labels in a real proceeding.
