Script Parenthetical Delimiter Check

Check whether a script parenthetical has outer parentheses and contains additional parentheses; this is not a full screenplay grammar validator.

Description

Check outer screenplay parenthetical delimiters and interior parentheses.

Writing records can represent speakers, scenes, aliases, rhyme labels and revision spans. These representations preserve selected conventions: a character count needs an indexing unit, an alias can be active over an inclusive period, and a stage-direction wrapper is a string pattern rather than a grammar. Mechanical labels do not evaluate literary quality or establish authorship.

Check outer screenplay parenthetical delimiters and interior parentheses.

When to use this tool

Use Script Parenthetical Delimiter Check when you already have text and need to check outer screenplay parenthetical delimiters and interior parentheses.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter text. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read wrapped, nestedParentheses. Inspect wrapped, nestedParentheses before interpreting the associated values.

wrapped=startsWith('(')&&endsWith(')'); if wrapped, remove one outer pair and flag any remaining ( or ).1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
textTextRequired. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
wrappedTrue exactly for a leading ( and trailing ) with at least two code units.Required. Boolean.
nestedParenthesesChecks the interior only when wrapped=true; false for unwrapped text even if it contains parentheses.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is not balanced-parenthesis parsing or screenplay validation. A lone opening parenthesis is not wrapped; nestedParentheses is always false when the outer check fails.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect the full passage, draft history and editorial style when interpreting the result. Use complete text or narrative analysis for meaning and structure; local markers, offsets and supplied attribution records only organize the stated information.
