Description
Return gaps between ordered character-mention positions.
Story planning separates the order of telling from fictional chronology, continuity records and practical writing budgets. Explicit labels, counts and invented calendar rules can make a local convention consistent without deciding narrative quality or inferring facts from manuscript prose.
Return gaps between ordered character-mention positions.
When to use this tool
Use Character Mention Cadence when checking a supplied story-continuity, chronology, calendar or drafting-budget convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter mentionPositions. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read gaps, meanGap, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.
Return gaps between ordered character-mention positions. Require nonnegative nondecreasing positions; gaps are adjacent differences, meanGap is total span/(count-1), otherwise zero with defined false.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| mentionPositions | Mention Positions | Required. Array of safe integer; maximum items 256. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| gaps | Gaps | Required. Array of safe integer; maximum items 256. |
| meanGap | Mean Gap | Required. Finite number. |
| defined | Whether the stated denominator or information basis permits interpretation of the associated value; inspect before using a placeholder. | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Duplicate positions yield zero gaps; mentions and their unit are supplied, not recognized from prose.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use the manuscript, scene outline and the chosen style/calendar policy for a complete editorial review; interpret numerical budgets in their narrative context.
