Surface Density Linear Thickness Factor Tool

Calculate surface density linear thickness factor from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return equivalent thickness from areal and volume mass densities.

Material-property conversions distinguish total quantities from values per area, mass, volume or thickness. Multiplication by a supplied density or geometry factor changes the basis only when its units and the material state agree with the original measurement.

Return equivalent thickness from areal and volume mass densities.

When to use this tool

Use Surface Density Linear Thickness Factor when converting the stated material-property basis using compatible supplied quantities.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter arealMassDensity, volumeMassDensity, sourceToCompatibleFactor. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read thickness. Use the output convention below.

Return equivalent thickness from areal and volume mass densities. Require arealMassDensity >= 0 and positive volumeMassDensity/sourceToCompatibleFactor; thickness = arealDensity*factor/volumeDensity.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The supplied factor must put areal mass into compatible units; uniform bulk density is assumed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified unit definitions and state-specific material data; model interfaces, layers and measurement geometry explicitly for complete physical calculations.
