Description
Return outward diffusive flux from a signed gradient.
Biological balance models use signed changes, conserved weights, compartment amounts and spatial conventions. A local term can preserve a supplied bookkeeping identity while the actual reactions, volumes, boundary conditions and biological interpretation still require a complete model.
Return outward diffusive flux from a signed gradient.
When to use this tool
Use Morphogen Boundary Flux Sign when checking one supplied biological balance, compartment or grid contribution.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter gradient, diffusivity, outwardNormal. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read outwardFlux. Use the output convention below.
Return outward diffusive flux from a signed gradient. Require diffusivity >= 0 and outwardNormal +1 or -1; outwardFlux = -diffusivity*gradient*normal.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| gradient | Gradient | Required. Finite number. |
| diffusivity | Diffusivity | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| outwardNormal | Outward Normal | Required. Safe integer. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| outwardFlux | Outward Flux | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Gradient and normal use the same axis convention; no boundary condition or spatial transport equation is solved.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use a complete dimensionally consistent reaction/transport model with verified parameters and suitable numerical methods for biological predictions.
