Radiative Forcing CO2 Logarithm

Calculate signed logarithmic CO2 radiative forcing change using caller concentration convention/coefficient; no warming, verified forcing or neglected gas/aerosol response is inferred.

Description

Carbon dioxide radiative forcing is often approximated as proportional to the logarithm of a concentration ratio.

Carbon dioxide radiative forcing is often approximated as proportional to the logarithm of a concentration ratio. This describes a change in radiative energy balance; a separate climate response model is needed to translate forcing into temperature.1

Calculate signed logarithmic CO2 radiative forcing change using caller concentration convention/coefficient; no warming, verified forcing or neglected gas/aerosol response is inferred.

When to use Radiative Forcing CO2 Logarithm

Use this tool to calculate signed logarithmic CO2 radiative forcing change using caller concentration convention/coefficient; no warming, verified forcing or neglected gas/aerosol response is inferred.

Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.

How to use Radiative Forcing CO2 Logarithm and understand its results

  1. Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.
  2. Enter initialCo2ConcentrationPpm, changedCo2ConcentrationPpm, callerLogForcingCoefficientWPerM2 using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read calibratedCo2ForcingChangeWPerM2. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
initialCo2ConcentrationPpmInitial co2 concentration ppmnumberRequired
changedCo2ConcentrationPpmChanged co2 concentration ppmnumberRequired
callerLogForcingCoefficientWPerM2Caller log forcing coefficient w per m2numberRequired

Enter positive initial and changed CO₂ concentrations in ppm and a positive coefficient in W/m². The tool computes the difference of their logarithms, which avoids overflowing a direct concentration ratio, and multiplies by the coefficient. Equal concentrations return zero, increases positive forcing and decreases negative forcing.

ΔF = coefficient × [ln(C_changed) − ln(C_initial)]

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The coefficient is supplied rather than fixed to a published parameterization. The estimate omits interactions with other gases, spectral refinements and feedbacks. It does not calculate emissions, future concentrations or warming by itself.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Transient Climate Response TCR Estimator: Evaluate one-box transient response at end of a linear forcing ramp (exponential CO2 growth under logarithmic forcing), with explicit restoring feedback/heat capacity/time and stable short-ramp limit; not observed TCR. For a complementary task, use Greenhouse Effect Enhancement Delta: Compare actual supplied surface temperature against measured outgoing-longwave blackbody-equivalent emission temperature; unlike solar equilibrium temperature, no absorbed/OLR equality or causal greenhouse attribution is assumed.
