Oceanity Conrad Index

Report named Conrad range/latitude-offset continentality and explicit 100-minus complementary oceanity convention; not clamped percentages or an independently validated maritime-climate probability.

Description

Conrad continentality combines the annual range of monthly temperature with latitude.

Conrad continentality combines the annual range of monthly temperature with latitude. Oceanity here is its arithmetic complement, describing a chosen index convention rather than a physical fraction of ocean influence.1

Report named Conrad range/latitude-offset continentality and explicit 100-minus complementary oceanity convention; not clamped percentages or an independently validated maritime-climate probability.

When to use Oceanity Conrad Index

Use this tool to report named Conrad range/latitude-offset continentality and explicit 100-minus complementary oceanity convention; not clamped percentages or an independently validated maritime-climate probability.

Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.

How to use Oceanity Conrad Index and understand its results

  1. Prepare the climate observations and any independently chosen thresholds or model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, time order and the intended seasonal window.
  2. Enter monthlyMeanTemperaturesC, absoluteLatitudeDegrees using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read conradContinentalityIndex, complementaryOceanityIndex. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
monthlyMeanTemperaturesCMonthly mean temperatures clist of numberRequired
absoluteLatitudeDegreesAbsolute latitude degreesnumberRequired

Enter exactly twelve finite monthly temperatures in °C and an absolute latitude between zero and 90 degrees. The tool finds the temperature range and applies the displayed latitude correction. It returns continentality and its complement without clamping either to the interval zero to 100.

continentality = 1.7(max T_month − min T_month)/sin[(|latitude| + 10)π/180] − 14; oceanity = 100 − continentality

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The indices can be negative or exceed 100; they are not probabilities or percentages constrained by a conservation law. The tool does not distinguish ocean currents, elevation, circulation or exposure, and does not establish a climate classification from a single index.

Numeric inputs and returned numeric values must be finite; an unrepresentable returned value produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Precipitation Seasonality CV: Report measured twelve-month precipitation seasonality under population monthly SD, not sample SD or silently smoothed/+1 precipitation; zero mean leaves CV undefined. For a complementary task, use Huglin Heliothermal Index: Calculate Huglin mean/maximum heliothermal contributions over caller supplied season with caller latitude/daylength coefficient and base; no implicit hemisphere calendar or grape suitability classification.
