Bioclimatic Variable BIO1-BIO19 Selector
Compute BIO1–BIO19 under explicit equal-month weighting/population-SD and cyclic three-month quarters, retaining first tied quarter indices; monthly climate normals only, no raster/geographic selector or WorldClim hidden +1 precipitation convention.
Description
BIO1–BIO19 summarize monthly temperature and precipitation patterns for climatic comparisons.
BIO1–BIO19 summarize monthly temperature and precipitation patterns for climatic comparisons. Weighting, seasonal-quarter definitions and zero-rain conventions affect the values, so this implementation makes those conventions explicit.1
Compute BIO1–BIO19 under explicit equal-month weighting/population-SD and cyclic three-month quarters, retaining first tied quarter indices; monthly climate normals only, no raster/geographic selector or WorldClim hidden +1 precipitation convention.
When to use Bioclimatic Variable BIO1-BIO19 Selector
Use this tool to compute BIO1–BIO19 under explicit equal-month weighting/population-SD and cyclic three-month quarters, retaining first tied quarter indices; monthly climate normals only, no raster/geographic selector or WorldClim hidden +1 precipitation convention.
Prepare the climate observations and independently chosen model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, chronological order and the intended seasonal window.
How to use Bioclimatic Variable BIO1-BIO19 Selector and understand its results
- Prepare the climate observations and independently chosen model parameters. Confirm units, daily coverage, chronological order and the intended seasonal window.
- Enter monthlyMinimumTemperaturesC, monthlyMaximumTemperaturesC, monthlyPrecipitationMm using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read bioclimaticVariablesBio1ThroughBio19, wettestQuarterStartMonthIndex, driestQuarterStartMonthIndex, warmestQuarterStartMonthIndex, coldestQuarterStartMonthIndex. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| monthlyMinimumTemperaturesC | Monthly minimum temperatures c | list of number | Required |
| monthlyMaximumTemperaturesC | Monthly maximum temperatures c | list of number | Required |
| monthlyPrecipitationMm | Monthly precipitation mm | list of number | Required |
Enter twelve aligned monthly minimum temperatures, maxima at least as high as minima, and nonnegative precipitation. Annual temperature range and mean precipitation must be positive. In order, outputs are mean temperature, mean diurnal range, 100×diurnal/annual range, 100×temperature SD, warmest maximum, coldest minimum, annual range, mean temperatures of wettest/driest/warmest/coldest quarters, annual precipitation, wettest/driest month precipitation, precipitation CV percent, and precipitation totals of those same four quarters. Quarters wrap across year end; first ties determine zero-based quarter-start indices.
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.
BIO1…BIO19 use twelve equal-weight months, population SD and cyclic three-month quarters Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |

| bioclimaticVariablesBio1ThroughBio19 | Bioclimatic variables bio1 through bio19 | list of number |
| wettestQuarterStartMonthIndex | Wettest quarter start month index | number |
| driestQuarterStartMonthIndex | Driest quarter start month index | number |
| warmestQuarterStartMonthIndex | Warmest quarter start month index | number |
| coldestQuarterStartMonthIndex | Coldest quarter start month index | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Monthly temperatures receive equal weight, and SD uses denominator twelve. Precipitation CV has no added-one correction. These explicit conventions can differ from other BIO datasets. The tool does not select raster cells or supply geographic climate data.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Climate Normal 30-Year Averager: Audit twelve month-of-year normals within an explicit 30-year baseline with independent observation flags/coverage, not missing-as-zero or a falsely complete climatological normal. For a complementary task, use Precipitation Seasonality CV: Report measured twelve-month precipitation seasonality under population monthly SD, not sample SD or silently smoothed/+1 precipitation; zero mean leaves CV undefined.
