When to use Inscription Letter Normalizer
Use this tool to apply caller-selected mechanical V/U and I/J transcription mappings.
Prepare the text or observed classification indicators requested. Select explicit transcription options where applicable.
How to use Inscription Letter Normalizer and understand its results
- Prepare the text or observed classification indicators requested. Select explicit transcription options where applicable.
- Enter text, mapVToU, mapIToJ using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read normalizedText, replacementCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| text | Inscription text | string | Required |
| mapVToU | Map V to U | boolean | Required |
| mapIToJ | Map I to J | boolean | Required |
Enter nonempty text and mapping booleans. Apply selected replacements, preserving letter case; return text/count.
V/v→U/u when enabled; I/i→J/j when enabled Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| normalizedText | Normalized text | string |
| replacementCount | Replacement count | integer; minimum: 0 |

} Limitations and assumptions
Mappings are global and do not determine vowel/consonant roles or historically correct transcription. Whitespace-only text is accepted.
Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Extremely large text inputs are rejected. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Latin Elision Marker: Find mechanical Latin vowel-contact candidates; poetic elision still requires scansion. For a complementary task, use Greek Diacritic Analyzer: Count Greek accent and breathing marks after canonical Unicode decomposition.
