Chemical Engineering: Pinch Hot Cold Shifted Temperature Tool

Apply the symmetric hot-minus/cold-plus half-approach temperature shift for a caller-selected pinch-analysis convention; no process network optimization.

Description

Shift a temperature for pinch-analysis comparison.

Heat-flow and specific-enthalpy terms depend on a sign convention, a reference state and compatible mass/time bases. A temperature shift, heat-duty residual or latent-energy ratio evaluates a supplied model without determining heat-transfer feasibility, actual properties or equipment performance.

Shift a temperature for pinch-analysis comparison.

When to use this tool

Use Chemical Engineering: Pinch Hot Cold Shifted Temperature when checking the stated thermal, reference-state or energy-balance convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter temperature, minimumApproach, stream. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Shift a temperature for pinch-analysis comparison. Require minimumApproach >= 0 and hot/cold stream label; subtract half the approach for hot, add half for cold.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
temperatureTemperatureRequired. Finite number.
minimumApproachNonnegative temperature difference; half is subtracted for hot streams and added for cold streams.Required. Finite number.
streamStreamRequired. Text; one of "hot", "cold". Implementation limit: 8192 Unicode code points and 16384 UTF-16 code units.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
resultReturned calculated value or nested object under the stated output convention.Required. Object.
result.shiftedTemperatureShifted TemperatureCalculated result member: number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use compatible temperature differences; this is a bookkeeping shift, not a composite curve, pinch point or heat-exchanger network solution.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified state-dependent properties and the complete heat/work balance; evaluate heat transfer and equipment constraints separately for engineering decisions.
