Description
Return heat-duty requirement under a work-into-system convention.
Heat-flow and specific-enthalpy terms depend on a sign convention, a reference state and compatible mass/time bases. A temperature shift, heat-duty residual or latent-energy ratio evaluates a supplied model without determining heat-transfer feasibility, actual properties or equipment performance.
Return heat-duty requirement under a work-into-system convention.
When to use this tool
Use Heat Duty Sign Residual when checking the stated thermal, reference-state or energy-balance convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter inletEnthalpyRate, outletEnthalpyRate, suppliedHeatDuty, suppliedWorkIntoSystem. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read requiredHeatDuty, residual. Use the output convention below.
Return heat-duty requirement under a work-into-system convention. requiredHeatDuty = outletEnthalpyRate-inletEnthalpyRate-suppliedWorkIntoSystem, residual = suppliedHeatDuty-required.1

| outletEnthalpyRate | Outlet Enthalpy Rate | Required. Finite number. |
| suppliedHeatDuty | Supplied Heat Duty | Required. Finite number. |
| suppliedWorkIntoSystem | Supplied Work Into System | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| requiredHeatDuty | Required Heat Duty | Required. Finite number. |
| residual | Signed difference in the direction stated above, with matching units. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- All terms share power units; this balance omits accumulation and kinetic/potential changes unless already included in inputs.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified state-dependent properties and the complete heat/work balance; evaluate heat transfer and equipment constraints separately for engineering decisions.
