MGRS 100km Square Letter Pair Validator
UTM MGRS 100km square letter inventory by zone set only; northing cycle, latitude-band intersection and UPS excluded.
Description
Check a two-letter UTM MGRS square inventory for a declared zone.
MGRS square identifiers use restricted letters associated with the longitudinal zone. This tool screens the two-letter square inventory for the declared zone, as one part of a fuller grid-reference check.
When to use this tool
Check a two-letter UTM MGRS square inventory for a declared zone. Use it when the input measurements and conventions below match the operation you need.
- Prepare utmZone, squareLetters, respecting the measurement basis and boundaries below.
- Compare the worked example with your intended operation before reusing its result.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter every field in the input table using the stated units and exact supported selector spelling where applicable.
- Run the tool. Correct input errors before interpreting an output.
- Read the result fields below; use accompanying flags and the stated sign, boundary or model convention when interpreting a number.
utmZone must be an integer from 1 to 60 and the square must be two uppercase letters. The allowed column letters cycle through three zone groups; the row inventory is A through V with I and O omitted. The result reports whether the pair meets those inventory checks.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| utmZone | Utm zone. | Integer; from 1 to 60 inclusive |
| squareLetters | Square letters. | Text |
| Output field | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| result | Object containing the following named result fields. |
| result.validUtmSquareLetterInventory | Valid utm square letter inventory flag under the exact conditions described above. |
| result.fullMgrsPositionValidated | Always false; the check covers only letter inventory. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The checker does not resolve latitude-band compatibility, row offsets or real-world square existence. Passing this partial check does not validate a complete MGRS coordinate.
- Every declared field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; input errors are distinct from a valid false result or an explicitly qualified output.
- Extremely large inputs and nonfinite or excessively large outputs are rejected. List positions reported by the tool use zero-based indices unless stated otherwise.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a map-layout decision, inspect the rendered map at its intended size as well as its numerical dimensions. For classification or coordinate work, retain the chosen boundary and coordinate conventions with the result. Compare the scope of the nearby tools below before substituting one.
