Taxonomic Author Parenthesis Label

Format explicitly supplied name and author text with an explicit parenthesis policy without determining nomenclatural history.

Description

Format supplied taxonomic author wording with optional parentheses.

Taxonomic records preserve author wording, publication sources, parent assignments and nomenclatural context. Parenthesizing an author is a formatting choice, and a supplied year field need not be restricted to modern calendar years. A source-qualified relationship does not establish accepted classification, valid publication or identity.

Format supplied taxonomic author wording with optional parentheses.

When to use this tool

Use Taxonomic Author Parenthesis Label when you already have suppliedName, suppliedAuthor, parenthesizeAuthor and need to format supplied taxonomic author wording with optional parentheses.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter suppliedName, suppliedAuthor, parenthesizeAuthor. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read label. Use the output convention below.

Require name/author nonempty; append author literally, wrapping it in one outer parenthesis pair when selected.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Existing punctuation is preserved. No basionym, recombination, nomenclatural code, author identity or correct parenthesis convention is determined.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the relevant specimens, original publications and controlled nomenclatural sources. Use complete taxonomic evidence and applicable codes for a classification decision; local formatting and keys do not adjudicate names or relationships.
