Description
Parse an author/year token with optional outer parentheses.
Taxonomic names, authorship strings, nomenclatural types and source-defined taxon concepts are related but distinct records. A literal token parser or source-label comparison can preserve a stated convention without resolving accepted taxonomy or establishing compliance with the applicable nomenclatural code.
Parse an author/year token with optional outer parentheses.
When to use this tool
Use Taxon Authorship Year Bracket Pair when checking the stated taxonomic source, name-token, date or concept-support convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter token. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read author, year, bracketed. Inspect bracketed before interpreting the associated values.
Parse an author/year token with optional outer parentheses. Require author text excluding commas/parentheses, comma-space and a four-digit year 1000-9999; return author, numeric year and bracketed flag.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| token | Token | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| author | Author | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| year | Whole year 1000..9999 under this parser's accepted author/year grammar. | Required. Safe integer. |
| bracketed | Bracketed | Required. Boolean. |
{
"input": {
"token": "(Smith, 1900)"
},
"output": {
"author": "Smith",
"year": 1900,
"bracketed": true
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- The parser does not authenticate authorship, handle all citation styles or determine the nomenclatural meaning of parentheses.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Consult the original taxonomic treatment and applicable nomenclatural code, and use source-aware taxonomic resolution for accepted names, priority or type status.
