Additive Variance Component
Derive the additive genetic variance by subtracting dominance and epistatic components from the total genetic variance.
Description
Derive the additive genetic variance by subtracting dominance and epistatic components from the total genetic variance.
Additive Variance Component applies one documented biological calculation to the values you provide. Derive the additive genetic variance by subtracting dominance and epistatic components from the total genetic variance.1
When to use Additive Variance Component
Use this population- or quantitative-genetics calculation when genotype counts, variance components, pedigree relationships, and ploidy follow the definitions assumed by the tool.
- Total genetic variance
- A finite measured or assumed value greater than or equal to 0.
- Dominance variance
- A finite measured or assumed value greater than or equal to 0.
- Epistatic variance
- A finite measured or assumed value greater than or equal to 0.
How Additive Variance Component calculates the result
The implementation follows this calculation rule: Derive the additive genetic variance by subtracting dominance and epistatic components from the total genetic variance.
- Additive variance
- The calculated additive variance.
Limitations of Additive Variance Component
Allele frequencies and genetic parameters describe the sampled population and model. Population structure, relatedness, selection, genotyping error, non-random mating, environmental covariance, and omitted variance components can bias interpretation. Preserve the input values and units so the result can be audited and recalculated.
Alternative or Complementary measurements
Inspect genotype counts and Hardy–Weinberg diagnostics, or fit a pedigree/genomic mixed model when individual records are available. Confidence intervals and replication across populations are more informative than a point estimate alone.
