Biomaterial Swelling Mass Volume Ratio Tool

Wet/dry ratios with ideal isotropic linear stretch from the cube root of the volume ratio.

Loading tool…

Description

Return wet/dry mass and volume ratios.

Biological engineering calculations combine supplied geometry, material properties, transport and quantity bases. An ideal channel resistance, scaffold fraction or thermal time scale can be dimensionally consistent without establishing real process conditions, safe exposure or biological performance.

Return wet/dry mass and volume ratios.

When to use this tool

Use Biomaterial Swelling Mass Volume Ratio when checking the stated benign geometry, transport, phantom or material-basis term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter dryMass, wetMass, dryVolume, wetVolume. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read massSwellingRatio, volumeSwellingRatio, linearIsotropicFactor. Use the output convention below.

Return wet/dry mass and volume ratios. Require positive dry mass/volume and nonnegative wet values; massSwellingRatio = wetMass/dryMass, volumeSwellingRatio = wetVolume/dryVolume, linearIsotropicFactor is its cube root.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Ratios below one are allowed; the cube root represents linear scaling only under an isotropic geometry assumption.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified properties, calibration and the complete applicable engineering model; assess actual laboratory/device conditions and biological suitability separately.
