Trait Unknown Value Denominator Tool

Calculate trait unknown value denominator from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return known-trait share under an unknown-status policy.

Biodiversity summaries depend on taxon concepts, sampling effort, detection and missing-status policies. Literal labels and observed shares can organize records while species identity, true abundance, occupancy and conservation status require appropriate ecological evidence and analysis.

Return known-trait share under an unknown-status policy.

When to use this tool

Use Trait Unknown Value Denominator when checking the stated biodiversity record, effort, count or support convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter known, unknown, excluded, includeUnknown. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read denominator, knownShare, unknownShare. Use the output convention below.

Return known-trait share under an unknown-status policy. Require known >= 1 and unknown/excluded nonnegative whole; denominator adds unknown only when includeUnknown, while unknownShare always uses known+unknown+excluded.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The two shares deliberately use different bases; no trait imputation, taxon identity or biodiversity estimate is supplied.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use source-aware taxonomy, verified field records and a suitable sampling/detection model for ecological estimates, uncertainty or conservation conclusions.
