Description
Classify supplied spatial uncertainty into ordered upper-bound bins.
Biodiversity records distinguish surveyed sites, nondetection, counts, sampling units, voucher references and source-qualified taxonomic states. A coordinate-precision label changes metadata rather than protecting a location. Relative abundance and mean count per represented unit depend on their supplied denominators and survey scope.
Classify supplied spatial uncertainty into ordered upper-bound bins.
When to use this tool
Use Survey Spatial Precision Bin when you already have uncertaintyMeters, upperBoundsMeters, labels and need to classify supplied spatial uncertainty into ordered upper-bound bins.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter uncertaintyMeters, upperBoundsMeters, labels. Follow any array-alignment requirements below. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read precisionBin. Use the output convention below.
Require uncertaintyMeters>=0, strictly increasing nonnegative upper bounds and exactly one more label than bounds. Select the first bound >= uncertainty, or the final overflow label.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| uncertaintyMeters | Uncertainty Meters | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| upperBoundsMeters | Strictly increasing nonnegative inclusive upper bounds; equality stays in the lower bin. | Required. Array of finite number; maximum items 256. |
| labels | Exactly one more entry than bounds, including a final overflow label. | Required. Array of text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192; maximum items 256. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| precisionBin | Precision Bin | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |

- Equality belongs to the lower bin; empty bounds give the sole label. No coordinate uncertainty is estimated, location disclosed or sensitive-site protection guaranteed.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Review specimens, original observations, sampling design and controlled taxonomic sources. Use complete detection, population and spatial methods when a local count fraction, source label or precision bin cannot answer the ecological or disclosure question.
