Species Singleton Transition Term Tool

Calculate species singleton transition term from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return one taxon's singleton-count transition.

Biodiversity summaries depend on taxon concepts, sampling effort, detection and missing-status policies. Literal labels and observed shares can organize records while species identity, true abundance, occupancy and conservation status require appropriate ecological evidence and analysis.

Return one taxon's singleton-count transition.

When to use this tool

Use Species Singleton Transition Term when checking the stated biodiversity record, effort, count or support convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter previousCount, addedObservations. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read wasSingleton, nowSingleton, singletonCountDelta. Inspect wasSingleton, nowSingleton before interpreting the associated values.

Return one taxon's singleton-count transition. Require nonnegative whole previousCount/addedObservations; compare old and updated count with one, singletonCountDelta is new flag minus old flag.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is one observed-count contribution, not a richness estimator, detection correction or actual species identification.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use source-aware taxonomy, verified field records and a suitable sampling/detection model for ecological estimates, uncertainty or conservation conclusions.
