Species Relative Abundance Share

Normalize one recorded species count against a compatible assemblage count without estimating unobserved abundance.

Description

Calculate a supplied species count share within an assemblage.

Biodiversity records distinguish surveyed sites, nondetection, counts, sampling units, voucher references and source-qualified taxonomic states. A coordinate-precision label changes metadata rather than protecting a location. Relative abundance and mean count per represented unit depend on their supplied denominators and survey scope.

Calculate a supplied species count share within an assemblage.

When to use this tool

Use Species Relative Abundance Share when you already have speciesCount, assemblageCount and need to calculate a supplied species count share within an assemblage.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter speciesCount, assemblageCount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read relativeAbundance. Use the output convention below.

Require a positive safe assemblage count and a safe species count in [0,assemblageCount]; divide species by assemblage.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
speciesCountSpecies CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
assemblageCountAssemblage CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 1.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
relativeAbundanceRelative AbundanceRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Counts must describe the same sampling scope and abundance basis. No detection correction, diversity metric or unobserved abundance is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review specimens, original observations, sampling design and controlled taxonomic sources. Use complete detection, population and spatial methods when a local count fraction, source label or precision bin cannot answer the ecological or disclosure question.
