Rare Species Observation Share Tool

Aggregate caller-classified rarity flags without inventing a species rarity threshold.

Description

Return observed share under supplied rare-taxon flags.

Biodiversity summaries depend on taxon concepts, sampling effort, detection and missing-status policies. Literal labels and observed shares can organize records while species identity, true abundance, occupancy and conservation status require appropriate ecological evidence and analysis.

Return observed share under supplied rare-taxon flags.

When to use this tool

Use Rare Species Observation Share when checking the stated biodiversity record, effort, count or support convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter counts, suppliedRare. Follow any array-alignment requirements below. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read rareCount, totalCount, share, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Return observed share under supplied rare-taxon flags. Require aligned nonnegative counts/flags; rareCount sums flagged rows, share divides by totalCount or is zero with defined false at zero total.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
countsCountsRequired. Array of safe integer; minimum 0; maximum items 256.
suppliedRareSupplied RareRequired. Array of boolean; maximum items 256.

rareCountRare CountRequired. Safe integer.
totalCountTotal CountRequired. Safe integer.
shareDimensionless numerator/denominator ratio under the explicit basis above.Required. Finite number.
definedWhether the stated denominator or information basis supports this value; inspect placeholders before interpretation.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Counts are nonnegative whole observations; rarity is supplied, not inferred from abundance or a conservation classification.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use source-aware taxonomy, verified field records and a suitable sampling/detection model for ecological estimates, uncertainty or conservation conclusions.
