SIM Masked Indole Motility
Decode SIM observations while preserving sulfide-masked motility as unreadable rather than falsely negative.
Description
In a SIM observation, sulfide blackening can hide the pattern needed to read motility.
In a SIM observation, sulfide blackening can hide the pattern needed to read motility. Keeping unreadable separate from negative prevents missing evidence from becoming a false negative.1
Decode SIM observations while preserving sulfide-masked motility as unreadable rather than falsely negative.
When to use SIM Masked Indole Motility
Use this tool to decode SIM observations while preserving sulfide-masked motility as unreadable rather than falsely negative.
Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
How to use SIM Masked Indole Motility and understand its results
- Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
- Enter sulfideBlackening, indoleRedRing, diffuseGrowth, motilityReadable using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read sulfideResult, indoleResult, motilityResult. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| sulfideBlackening | Sulfide blackening | boolean | Required |
| indoleRedRing | Indole red ring | boolean | Required |
| diffuseGrowth | Diffuse growth | boolean | Required |
| motilityReadable | Motility readable | boolean | Required |
Enter sulfide-blackening, indole-red-ring, diffuse-growth and motility-readable flags. The decoder permits unreadable motility only when sulfide blackening is the supplied reason. It returns positive/negative sulfide and indole labels, then unreadable or the diffuse-growth motility result. An unreadable flag without blackening is an input error.
motility = unreadable if not readable, else diffuseGrowth ? positive : negative Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| sulfideResult | Sulfide result | string |
| indoleResult | Indole result | string |
| motilityResult | Motility result | string |

It preserves supplied observations without checking assay timing or identifying a species. Diffuse-growth input does not override an unreadable motility state; other reasons for unreadability are outside this decoder.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use TSI Slant Butt Logic: Interpret valid TSI reaction pairs with acid-butt inference under sulfide blackening; not a species identification. For a complementary task, use Nitrate Zinc Step Logic: Resolve the nitrate reduction confirmation sequence from initial reagent and zinc observations, without organism identification.
