Mutation Frequency Resistant Colonies per Total Calculator
Compute resistant colony fraction, not a Luria-Delbruck mutation rate or a per-generation rate.
Description
Compute resistant colony fraction, not a Luria-Delbruck mutation rate or a per-generation rate.
A resistant-colony fraction is an observed frequency among viable colonies. A mutation rate per generation requires additional experimental and statistical assumptions.
When to use this tool
Compute resistant colony fraction, not a Luria-Delbruck mutation rate or a per-generation rate.
- Prepare the supplied resistantColonies, totalViableColonies fields for this operation.
- Compare the complete example with the representation used by your own input before carrying the result into another step.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter resistantColonies, totalViableColonies. Use the exact text syntax, units and index conventions explained below.
- Run the tool. If input validation fails, correct the supplied fields before interpreting any result.
- Read result.observedMutationFrequency, result.mutationRatePerGeneration. Interpret false, null and empty lists using the distinctions below; they can be valid outputs.
Validate resistantColonies as a nonnegative integer subset of positive totalViableColonies. Return their ratio as observedMutationFrequency and mutationRatePerGeneration not-estimated.1
| Input field | Meaning and representation | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| resistantColonies | Observed subset count used as the numerator. | Nonnegative safe integer, no greater than totalViableColonies |
| totalViableColonies | Observed total count used as the denominator. | Positive safe integer, at least resistantColonies |
| Output field | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| result | Object containing the named outputs below. |
| result.observedMutationFrequency | The observed mutation frequency value under the stated formula or text convention. |
| result.mutationRatePerGeneration | The mutation rate per generation value under the stated formula or text convention. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The output is a fraction, not a percentage or a fluctuation-test rate estimate. Plating efficiency, selection conditions, preexisting variation and sampling uncertainty are not modeled.
- Every declared top-level field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; ordinary text fields are bounded to 8,192 UTF-16 code units, with tighter operation-specific limits where stated.
- Ordinary string lists have at most 128 entries of at most 128 code units each; numeric lists and matrices have separate bounded size checks. Nonfinite results and excessively large serialized outputs are rejected.
- Indexes are zero-based and spans have an exclusive end unless explicitly stated otherwise. A valid false, null or empty-list result is distinct from malformed input.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Retain specimen context, controls and independently observed features alongside a test label. Use a complete validated identification or analytical workflow when conclusions require several assays; a single stored morphology definition, feature flag or threshold comparison does not identify an organism.
