COSO Five Components Element Mapping Grid

Map supplied control-element labels to the five COSO component names and report which components remain unmapped.

Description

COSO organizes internal control into five components.

COSO organizes internal control into five components. This tool recognizes already assigned component names rather than interpreting free-form controls.1

The returned values include All components mapped, Covered components, Mapped elements, Missing components. The How section below explains the calculation, input rules and interpretation.

When to use COSO Five Components Element Mapping Grid

Use COSO Five Components Element Mapping Grid when you need to evaluate the supplied records under the calculation and evidence rules below. Unknown labels are ignored and absent from output. No control-to-component semantic mapping or effectiveness assessment is performed.

Prepare source-backed observations and the applicable engagement policy before entering facts. Use consistent monetary units and periods. Supply all boolean evidence flags explicitly, and treat a successful screen as a reason to continue professional review.

How to use COSO Five Components Element Mapping Grid and understand its results

  1. Prepare source-backed observations and the applicable engagement policy before entering facts. Use consistent monetary units and periods. Supply all boolean evidence flags explicitly, and treat a successful screen as a reason to continue professional review.
  2. Enter controlElements using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read completeCoverage, coveredComponents, mappedElements, missingComponents. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
controlElementsControl-element labels mapped to control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, or monitoring activities.list of stringRequired

Supply possibly empty nonblank labels; trim/lowercase and replace every run of nonalphanumeric characters with underscore. Recognize control_environment,risk_assessment,control_activities,information_and_communication,monitoring_activities. Count valid occurrences including duplicates; return canonical-order covered/missing and all-covered flag.

coverage=distinct recognized canonical component labels

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Unknown labels are ignored and absent from output. No control-to-component semantic mapping or effectiveness assessment is performed.

Numeric inputs, where present, must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Core numeric and string lists are limited to 100,000 entries; text entries are subject to the general large-text limit. Follow any smaller calculation limits above. Missing fields without a declared default, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use ITGC Access Change Operations Domain Split Lookup: ITGC coverage can be organized into access, change and operations domains. A mapping label records scope rather than testing its controls. For a complementary task, use Control Deficiency Significant Material Weakness Severity Waterfall: Control deficiency, significant deficiency and material weakness describe progressively severe entered categories. Amount alone does not assign severity.
