Radar Gate Overlap Fraction Tool

Calculate radar gate overlap fraction from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return target overlap with a positive-width radar gate.

Radar and lidar measurements combine propagation distance, pulse/gate geometry, background and instrument response. A local range or normalization term can be useful without detecting a target, retrieving atmospheric properties or establishing calibrated sampling resolution.

Return target overlap with a positive-width radar gate.

When to use this tool

Use Radar Gate Overlap Fraction when checking the stated radar/lidar geometry, signal or transmission convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter gateStart, gateEnd, targetStart, targetEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read overlap, gateFraction. Use the output convention below.

Return target overlap with a positive-width radar gate. Require gateEnd > gateStart and ordered target bounds; overlap = max(0,min(ends)-max(starts)), gateFraction = overlap/gate width.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Touching intervals give zero width; target detection, beam response and an actual sampled volume are not determined.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified instrument calibration and a complete appropriate retrieval/response model, including geometry and signal uncertainty, for actual remote-sensing conclusions.
