Optimistic Venus-Mars HZ Limits Estimator Calculator

Conditional optimistic HZ endpoints from caller independently applicable effective-flux criteria; no proof of water, atmosphere or life.

Description

Optimistic Venus-Mars HZ Limits Estimator Calculator: return inner au, outer au, width au.

The optimistic habitable zone uses the empirical recent-Venus inner limit and early-Mars outer limit. Luminosity and the corresponding effective-flux thresholds determine the boundary distances; being between them does not establish habitability.

The results are the inner radius, outer radius and their difference, all in astronomical units (AU). You supply both the stellar luminosity and the two flux thresholds.

When to use this tool

Use this tool when the supplied inputs match the specific operation described above and you need a repeatable result under its stated convention.

  • Check the supported input and output contract against an existing calculation or observation.
  • Use the complete example to confirm units, selector spelling and result interpretation.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter luminositySolar and both effective-flux thresholds using the units defined below. The inner threshold must exceed the outer threshold.
  2. Run the calculation. Correct input errors before interpreting the result.
  3. Read innerAu and outerAu as distances in AU, and widthAu as outerAu minus innerAu. Assess the supplied model thresholds separately.

Enter luminositySolar as the luminosity ratio L/L_sun. Each effective-flux input is a dimensionless ratio to present solar irradiance at Earth’s orbital distance of 1 AU: 1 means that reference irradiance. Do not enter a flux in W/m². With these normalized inputs, the relation sqrt(luminositySolar / effectiveFlux) returns a distance in AU.1

The tool calculates innerAu = sqrt(luminositySolar / callerRecentVenusFlux) and outerAu = sqrt(luminositySolar / callerEarlyMarsFlux), then returns widthAu = outerAu - innerAu. It rejects inputs unless callerRecentVenusFlux exceeds callerEarlyMarsFlux.2

Limitations and assumptions

  • The supplied flux boundaries are not inferred or validated, and a position within this zone does not establish habitability.
  • Every declared field is required and unexpected fields are rejected. Numeric inputs must be finite; input errors are distinct from a valid false result or an explicitly qualified output.
  • Extremely large inputs and nonfinite or excessively large outputs are rejected. List positions reported by the tool use zero-based indices unless stated otherwise.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Check the underlying observations, units and conventions independently before using the result in a larger workflow. The tools listed below address nearby tasks; compare their inputs and scope before substituting one for this operation.
