Print Plate Impression Size Ratio

Compare explicit impression and plate dimensions axis by axis without assessing authenticity or image scaling history.

Description

Compare supplied impression dimensions with plate dimensions.

Art records distinguish inscriptions, source readings, edition states, provenance dates and authority identifiers. A recorded signature is not authenticated authorship, and a possible-date span is not a probability distribution. Linear impression/plate ratios preserve selected geometry without establishing edition identity or value.

Compare supplied impression dimensions with plate dimensions.

When to use this tool

Use Print Plate Impression Size Ratio when you already have plateWidth, plateHeight, impressionWidth, impressionHeight and need to compare supplied impression dimensions with plate dimensions.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter plateWidth, plateHeight, impressionWidth, impressionHeight. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read widthRatio, heightRatio. Use the output convention below.

Require positive plate width/height and nonnegative impression width/height; return each impression dimension divided by the matching plate dimension.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • These are independent linear ratios, not an area ratio or proof of a matching print. Units and orientation must match; no material shrinkage, authenticity or edition is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Inspect original works, source documents, catalogues and relevant authority records. Use the complete provenance and scholarly assessment for attribution, chronology or rights; local labels and ratios do not make those determinations.
