Object Surface Sampling Fraction Tool

Calculate object surface sampling fraction from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return object surface sampling fraction.

Conservation records distinguish sampled support, retained material, environmental bands and time-dependent model terms. A caller-supplied band or decay constant does not establish an appropriate preservation target. Local bookkeeping and simple exponential response models require separate evidence about the object and its environment.

Return object surface sampling fraction.

When to use this tool

Use Object Surface Sampling Fraction when checking the stated sampling, material balance or environmental-response convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter sampledArea, totalArea. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read fraction. Use the output convention below.

Return object surface sampling fraction. Require totalArea > 0 and sampledArea in [0,total]; fraction = sampled/total.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
sampledAreaSampled AreaRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
totalAreaTotal AreaRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
fractionDimensionless ratio using the denominator specified above; not a percentage unless explicitly stated.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This does not establish representative sampling, permissible intervention or an object's actual condition.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review verified records and the object-specific preservation assessment with a qualified conservator for actual sampling, display or treatment decisions.
