Sherd Refit Conjoin Pair Count Tool

Deduplicate undirected observed sherd conjoins and summarize connected refit groups including isolates; linked groups do not establish complete vessel count, and no unseen joins are invented.

Description

Observed sherd conjoins form a graph of linked fragments.

Observed sherd conjoins form a graph of linked fragments. Connected refit groups and isolated sherds describe that graph without establishing how many complete vessels existed.1

Deduplicate undirected observed sherd conjoins and summarize connected refit groups including isolates; linked groups do not establish complete vessel count, and no unseen joins are invented.

When to use Sherd Refit Conjoin Pair Count Tool

Use this tool to deduplicate undirected observed sherd conjoins and summarize connected refit groups including isolates; linked groups do not establish complete vessel count, and no unseen joins are invented.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Sherd Refit Conjoin Pair Count Tool and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter sherdIds, observedConjoinPairs using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read uniqueConjoinPairCount, duplicatePairRecordCount, refitGroupCount, largestRefitGroupSherdCount, isolatedSherdCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
sherdIdsSherd idslist of numberRequired
observedConjoinPairsObserved conjoin pairslist of list of numberRequired

Enter 1–128 distinct nonnegative integer sherd IDs and observed pairs of two distinct known IDs. Treat reversed pairs as duplicates, count unique edges and merge linked IDs with union-find. Return duplicate records, connected-group count, largest group size and isolated-shard count. No supplied joins is valid and leaves every sherd isolated.

unique pairs = distinct unordered observed edges; groups = graph connected components including isolates

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Only observed conjoins are used. No missing links or vessel identities are inferred, and connected groups are not automatically minimum vessel counts.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use MNI From Elements: Take maximum element-specific individual lower bounds from caller nonduplicated age/side/diagnostic strata; MNI depends on pooling and identified copies, not raw fragmented NISP. For a complementary task, use NISP Specimen Count By Taxa Tool: Tabulate one taxon assignment per observed specimen while retaining explicitly unassigned records; fragmentation and element counts do not convert NISP to individuals.
