Edge Retouch Index

Compute observed linear edge retouch coverage and extreme bounds for missing edge; not scar-depth intensity or a manufacturing/usage diagnosis.

Description

A linear retouch index measures how much observed edge has been retouched.

A linear retouch index measures how much observed edge has been retouched. Missing edge creates a range of possible whole-edge coverage rather than a single certain value.1

Compute observed linear edge retouch coverage and extreme bounds for missing edge; not scar-depth intensity or a manufacturing/usage diagnosis.

When to use Edge Retouch Index

Use this tool to compute observed linear edge retouch coverage and extreme bounds for missing edge; not scar-depth intensity or a manufacturing/usage diagnosis.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Edge Retouch Index and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter observedEdgeSegmentLengthsMm, retouchedSegmentFractions, unobservableEdgeLengthMm using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read retouchedObservedEdgeLengthMm, observedEdgeRetouchIndex, totalEdgeRetouchFractionBounds. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
observedEdgeSegmentLengthsMmObserved edge segment lengths mmlist of numberRequired
retouchedSegmentFractionsRetouched segment fractionslist of numberRequired
unobservableEdgeLengthMmUnobservable edge length mmnumberRequired

Pair positive observed edge-segment lengths in mm with retouched fractions in [0,1], and enter nonnegative unobservable length. Return observed retouched length, its fraction of observed edge, and bounds assuming none or all of the missing edge is retouched.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

observedIndex = Σ(length_i retouchedFraction_i)/Σlength_i; whole-edge bounds = [retouched/total,(retouched+missing)/total]

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Bounds are extreme coverage scenarios, not confidence intervals. The tool does not measure scar depth, manufacturing stage or use history, and assumes supplied segments do not overlap.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Cortex Percentage Flake Estimator: Summarize measured dorsal cortex coverage per flake and pooled physical area, distinguishing unequal-sized flakes from a mean percentage. For a complementary task, use Microblade Core Index: Compute per-core measured scar/platform width indexes with caller screening cutoff; no universal microblade identity or core reconstruction inferred.
