Orifice Index Vessel

Compute area-equivalent elliptical vessel mouth and per-vessel orifice/body index, not a fixed circular diameter ratio or functional classification.

Description

An elliptical vessel mouth has the same area as a circle with diameter equal to the geometric mean of its axes.

An elliptical vessel mouth has the same area as a circle with diameter equal to the geometric mean of its axes. Comparing that equivalent diameter with body diameter makes the index explicit for noncircular mouths.1

Compute area-equivalent elliptical vessel mouth and per-vessel orifice/body index, not a fixed circular diameter ratio or functional classification.

When to use Orifice Index Vessel

Use this tool to compute area-equivalent elliptical vessel mouth and per-vessel orifice/body index, not a fixed circular diameter ratio or functional classification.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Orifice Index Vessel and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter orificeMajorDiametersMm, orificeMinorDiametersMm, bodyMaximumDiametersMm using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read equivalentCircularOrificeDiametersMm, orificeToBodyIndexesPercent. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
orificeMajorDiametersMmOrifice major diameters mmlist of numberRequired
orificeMinorDiametersMmOrifice minor diameters mmlist of numberRequired
bodyMaximumDiametersMmBody maximum diameters mmlist of numberRequired

Pair positive major and minor mouth diameters and maximum body diameters in mm. Require minor≤major≤body for each vessel. Return area-equivalent circular mouth diameters and mouth-to-body indices as percentages.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

equivalentDiameter = √(major × minor); indexPercent = 100 equivalentDiameter/bodyDiameter

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The mouth is modeled as an ellipse, while body size is represented by one maximum diameter. The result does not classify vessel function or reconstruct its capacity.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Vessel Volume From Rim Diameter: Reconstruct piecewise conical-frustum interior volume from a supplied normalized vessel profile scaled by measured interior rim diameter; no universal rim-only vessel shape assumed. For a complementary task, use Mean Ceramic Wall Thickness: Summarize ceramic wall measurements weighted by represented profile length, retaining sampled minimum/maximum rather than assuming uniform thickness.
