Slag Iron Yield

Balance elemental iron in declared feed, slag and other loss to a recovered-iron scenario; elemental versus oxide assay basis must be consistent, and slag composition alone cannot establish yield.

Description

Recovered-iron scenarios require an elemental mass balance across feed, slag and other losses.

Recovered-iron scenarios require an elemental mass balance across feed, slag and other losses. A slag assay alone cannot determine yield without the original iron inventory.1

Balance elemental iron in declared feed, slag and other loss to a recovered-iron scenario; elemental versus oxide assay basis must be consistent, and slag composition alone cannot establish yield.

When to use Slag Iron Yield

Use this tool to balance elemental iron in declared feed, slag and other loss to a recovered-iron scenario; elemental versus oxide assay basis must be consistent, and slag composition alone cannot establish yield.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Slag Iron Yield and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter feedMassKg, feedIronMassFraction, slagMassKg, slagIronMassFraction, otherIronLossKg using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read feedIronKg, slagIronKg, modelRecoveredIronKg, modelIronRecoveryFraction. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
feedMassKgFeed mass kgnumberRequired
feedIronMassFractionFeed iron mass fractionnumberRequired
slagMassKgSlag mass kgnumberRequired
slagIronMassFractionSlag iron mass fractionnumberRequired
otherIronLossKgOther iron loss kgnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative feed, slag and other-loss masses in kg and elemental iron fractions in [0,1]. Feed iron must be positive and losses may not exceed it. Return feed and slag iron, modeled recovered iron and its fraction of feed iron.

feedIron = feedMass × feedFraction; recovered = feedIron−slagMass×slagFraction−otherLoss

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Assays must use a consistent elemental iron basis; oxide percentages require separate conversion. Other losses and recovery are supplied balance assumptions rather than measured smelting yield.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Copper Alloy Tin Percent: Report measured tin share on the copper-plus-tin subsystem and incomplete declared assay closure; undeclared material is not automatically copper or an alloy identity. For a complementary task, use Faience Glass Composition Ratio Tool: Convert measured glass oxide mass percentages to soda/silica and lime/silica molar ratios using supplied oxide molar masses; no recipe, phase or provenance classification.
