Enamel Hypoplasia Band Count Tool

Tabulate independently identified enamel bands with tooth observability and crown-length exposure; multiple teeth may record the same episode and counts are not distinct stress events or diagnoses.

Description

Enamel-band counts depend on how much tooth crown can be observed.

Enamel-band counts depend on how much tooth crown can be observed. Counting bands across teeth does not automatically count distinct episodes because several teeth can record the same event.1

Tabulate independently identified enamel bands with tooth observability and crown-length exposure; multiple teeth may record the same episode and counts are not distinct stress events or diagnoses.

When to use Enamel Hypoplasia Band Count Tool

Use this tool to tabulate independently identified enamel bands with tooth observability and crown-length exposure; multiple teeth may record the same episode and counts are not distinct stress events or diagnoses.

Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.

How to use Enamel Hypoplasia Band Count Tool and understand its results

  1. Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
  2. Enter toothIds, observableCrownLengthsMm, identifiedBandCounts using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read totalIdentifiedBands, assessableToothCount, bandsPerAssessableTooth, pooledBandsPerObservableMm. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
toothIdsTooth idslist of numberRequired
observableCrownLengthsMmObservable crown lengths mmlist of numberRequired
identifiedBandCountsIdentified band countslist of numberRequired

Enter 1–128 unique nonnegative tooth IDs, aligned nonnegative crown lengths in mm and nonnegative integer identified band counts. A zero-observability tooth cannot have observed bands, and at least one tooth must be assessable. Return total bands, assessable count and both tooth- and length-normalized rates.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

bandsPerTooth = totalBands/assessableTeeth; bandsPerMm = totalBands/totalObservableLength

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Band identification and observability are supplied. The tool does not diagnose stress, date episodes or deduplicate the same event recorded in different teeth.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Pathology Prevalence Per Skeleton: Summarize caller-observed skeletal pathology prevalence and Wilson binomial interval on assessable skeletons, retaining unassessable coverage; not living-population disease prevalence or clinical diagnosis. For a complementary task, use Isotopic Weaning Age Enamel: Locate a unique caller isotopic-enrichment transition on supplied enamel formation ages, excluding enamel maturation lag/other diet effects; proxy timing is not a confirmed age at cessation of breastfeeding.
