Ceramic Petrographic Point Count Tool
Normalize classified ceramic petrographic point counts while preserving unclassified sample coverage; volume interpretation requires representative random section sampling, not inferred provenance.
Description
Petrographic point counts summarize classified categories while unclassified points describe coverage.
Petrographic point counts summarize classified categories while unclassified points describe coverage. Percentages among identified points should not imply that every sampled point was identified.1
Normalize classified ceramic petrographic point counts while preserving unclassified sample coverage; volume interpretation requires representative random section sampling, not inferred provenance.
When to use Ceramic Petrographic Point Count Tool
Use this tool to normalize classified ceramic petrographic point counts while preserving unclassified sample coverage; volume interpretation requires representative random section sampling, not inferred provenance.
Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
How to use Ceramic Petrographic Point Count Tool and understand its results
- Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
- Enter classifiedPetrographicCounts, unclassifiedPointCount using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read classifiedCategoryPercentages, unclassifiedPercentOfAllPoints, classifiedPointCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| classifiedPetrographicCounts | Classified petrographic counts | list of number | Required |
| unclassifiedPointCount | Unclassified point count | integer | Required |
Enter nonnegative integer classified counts and an unclassified count. Classified total must be positive. Return normalized category percentages, the unclassified share of all points and classified total.
categoryPercent_i = 100 count_i/classifiedTotal; unclassifiedPercent = 100 unclassified/(classifiedTotal+unclassified) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| classifiedCategoryPercentages | Classified category percentages | list of number |
| unclassifiedPercentOfAllPoints | Unclassified percent of all points | number |
| classifiedPointCount | Classified point count | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Volume interpretation requires representative random section sampling. The calculation does not classify minerals, assess sampling bias or establish ceramic provenance.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Type Frequency Percent Per Phase: Normalize classified ceramic types within each phase and report excluded unclassified coverage on original denominators; not pooled across phases or a forced chronological classifier. For a complementary task, use XRF Element Ratio Provenance Tool: Blank/response-correct paired XRF element signals and screen a supplied source ratio band; signed numerator nondetections remain visible and a single ratio does not identify provenance.
