Bone Collagen Yield Percent Checker
Calculate blank-corrected dry-bone collagen yield and compare caller QC threshold, preserving negative blank-corrected nondetections; yield alone does not establish collagen integrity or reliable dating.
Description
Collagen yield compares extracted mass with sampled dry bone mass.
Collagen yield compares extracted mass with sampled dry bone mass. Blank correction can produce a signed nondetection, which should remain visible rather than being silently set to zero.1
Calculate blank-corrected dry-bone collagen yield and compare caller QC threshold, preserving negative blank-corrected nondetections; yield alone does not establish collagen integrity or reliable dating.
When to use Bone Collagen Yield Percent Checker
Use this tool to calculate blank-corrected dry-bone collagen yield and compare caller QC threshold, preserving negative blank-corrected nondetections; yield alone does not establish collagen integrity or reliable dating.
Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
How to use Bone Collagen Yield Percent Checker and understand its results
- Prepare the artifact, site or survey measurements and any independently established calibration or model choices. Keep paired observations aligned and confirm units and coordinate conventions.
- Enter dryBoneMassGrams, extractedCollagenMassGrams, blankMassGrams, callerMinimumYieldPercent using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read blankCorrectedCollagenYieldPercent, aboveCallerYieldThreshold. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| dryBoneMassGrams | Dry bone mass grams | number | Required |
| extractedCollagenMassGrams | Extracted collagen mass grams | number | Required |
| blankMassGrams | Blank mass grams | number | Required |
| callerMinimumYieldPercent | Caller minimum yield percent | number | Required |
Supply positive dry bone mass in g, nonnegative extracted and blank masses and nonnegative minimum yield percent. Extracted mass cannot exceed sampled dry bone mass. Return signed corrected yield and an inclusive at-least-threshold boolean, despite above in the output name.
yieldPercent = 100(extractedMass−blankMass)/dryBoneMass Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| blankCorrectedCollagenYieldPercent | Blank corrected collagen yield percent | number |
| aboveCallerYieldThreshold | Above caller yield threshold | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
Negative corrected yields are valid numerical results. Yield alone does not establish collagen preservation or reliable radiocarbon dating; blank and extraction uncertainty are not propagated.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use C:N Ratio Diet Indicator: Convert measured C/N mass percentages to atomic ratio and caller collagen-preservation screen; this ratio is not a diet determination. For a complementary task, use Calibrated Age Intercept Range: Intersect a measured radiocarbon uncertainty band with a supplied piecewise-linear calibration curve, retaining disjoint intervals; not Bayesian calibration, curve uncertainty or an embedded IntCal lookup.
