Sediment Trap Dry Mass Flux

Normalize measured sediment-trap dry mass by positive collector area and deployment duration without correcting collection efficiency.

Loading tool…

Description

Calculate nominal dry-mass trap flux per area and day.

Aquatic measurements depend on depth datums, effective sampling area, layer weights and concentration definitions. Secchi pair averages differ from a full optical model, and particulate-by-difference values depend on comparable total/dissolved measurements. A nominal rectangular sampling volume does not establish actual filtered effort or detection.

Calculate nominal dry-mass trap flux per area and day.

When to use this tool

Use Sediment Trap Dry Mass Flux when you already have dryMassGrams, trapAreaSquareMeters, deploymentDays and need to calculate nominal dry-mass trap flux per area and day.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter dryMassGrams, trapAreaSquareMeters, deploymentDays. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read gramsPerSquareMeterDay. Use the output convention below.

Require dryMassGrams>=0, trapAreaSquareMeters>0 and deploymentDays>0; divide mass by area and then days.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Output is g/(m² day) under the supplied effective area/time convention. No collection efficiency, blank correction, vertical settling or sedimentation representativeness is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Review original field and laboratory records with the complete survey or process model. Include calibration, temporal coverage, sampling efficiency and uncertainty when local rates, depth shifts or labels cannot establish the aquatic quantity of interest.
